A heated topic in the 88th Texas Legislative Session was the need to remove sexually explicit books from public schools.
HB 900, authored by Representative Jared Patterson in the House and Senator Angela Paxton in the Senate, passed in the 88th Legislative Session, garnering strong support from Representative Cole Hefner as a co-author and Public Education Committee Member and Senator Bryan Hughes as a co-sponsor. The bill prohibits the possession, acquisition, and purchase of harmful library material that is sexually explicit, pervasively vulgar, or educationally unsuitable. In November 2021, Governor Greg Abbott sent a letter to the Texas Association of School Boards to ensure no child is exposed to sexually explicit or other inappropriate content at a Texas public school.
HB 900 was signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott in June of last year. “…parents deserve to know what books are in school libraries. I’m signing a law that gets inappropriate or vulgar materials out of our schools,” said Governor Abbott. In his letter to the Texas Association of School Boards in November of 2021, Governor Abbott said the following, “The most flagrant examples include clearly pornographic images and substance that have no place in the Texas public education system. You have an obligation to Texas parents and students to ensure that no child in Texas is exposed to pornography or other inappropriate content while inside a Texas public school.”
